LAGOS REITERATES CALL FOR CONSERVATION OF WETLANDS RESOURCES…..

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello

The Lagos State Government has renewed the call for the conservation of wetlands resources, saying they represent a critical part of the natural environment, help in reducing the impacts of flood, absorb pollutant and improve water quality.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello made the call in a statement to commemorate this year’s World Wetlands Day on Sunday.

Mr. Bello said as a coastal State, Lagos State associates with the rest of the world in marking the 2020 World Wetlands day with the theme: “Wetland and Biodiversity”.

He stated that this year’s theme “Wetland and Biodiversity” is unique and an opportunity to highlight wetland biodiversity, its status and why it matters,

The Commissioner described the annual event as an opportunity to promote actions to reverse the loss of wetlands which is having severe consequences for the ecosystems and human survival.

Mr Bello called for more community participation in wetlands management and conservation with a promise that the State Government would step up its monitoring and advocacy programme for the protection of the its wetland resources.
