Today is the International Air Traffic Controllers’ Day with the Theme: “Singling out Individuals does not improve safety, Support an open reporting culture”.
The Day is dedicated to celebrating the men and women who work hard in ensuring safe air navigation.
In commemoration of the Day, the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association, NATCA, has called on the Federal Government to set aside special fund dedicated for the training of ATC personnel and other technical staff in air navigation to enhance safety.
President, Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association, NATCA, Mr. Yomi Agoro says they were happy that safety of air navigation had been enhanced with the installation and upgrade of radio communication. He assured that the Nigeria airspace was safe.
Mr Agoro however stressed that apart from the provision of facilities, the personnel had to be equipped through training and retraining with the current realities in the industry, adding that the less 350 air traffic controllers in the country was inadequate.
He also called on government to increase the retirement age of controllers from 60 to 65.
Managing Director, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, Captain Fola Akinkuotu says to relieve the pressure on the controllers in the area of communication, the agency embarked on sectorization of the Lagos and Kano Flight information region.
He stressed that efforts were on to further enhance navigation systems and in the area of training.
While applauding their efforts in ensuring safety, Captain Akinkuotu urged the controllers to be more committed and willing to give their best for a safer Nigerian airspace.
