Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu launches Lagos State Blue Box Recycling Programme

As part of efforts towards zero tolerance to waste disposal, sustainable environment and culture of waste recycling in Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched the Lagos State Blue Box Recycling Programme to ensure cleanliness in the state.

In his keynote address,  Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu explained that the aim of the program was not to rely on the old ways of removal of waste but also to tap into the use of turning waste into wealth.

He stressed that the quest to rid Lagos of refuse was a collective measure, calling on everyone to be environmentally responsible to their immediate environment.

In a welcome address, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Olatunji Bello stressed that one of the challenges faced in the state was the alarming increasing population which has impacted negatively on availability of space for infrastructural developments.

Also in his remarks, the Managing Director, Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin who said the Blue Box Program would encourage and enhance separation of recyclable materials from the general waste at the point of generation, urged every household to get the blue and black containers for recycling and waste disposal.

Correspondent Eunice Olile reports that highlight of the program was a drama presentation, rendition by a twelve year old girl, and distribution of the the boxes and bags to participants.
